“Sunscreens protect against sunburn, but there’s no evidence that they protect against basal cell carcinoma or melanoma.”… “Death from skin cancer is advertised as being avoidable with the use of sunscreens. This position might actually be true, but there is as yet absolutely no scientific evidence to support it.”

We should all be grateful to the researcher I just quoted: Marianne Berwick, PhD, MPH, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. For 20 years, Dr. Berwick has been calling attention to the information gap behind the sunscreens-prevent-cancer message to the public. As the Division Chief & Head of Cancer Epidemiology & Prevention at UMC, she has co-authored over a hundred research papers about skin cancers. In a new commentary for Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics, she is asking, once again, the research question that all dermatologists should be asking: Where’s the proof for sunscreens?

A small, preliminary study published in the journal Pediatrics showed a combination treatment can alleviate symptoms of the painful itchy skin disease called atopic dermatitis, which is the most common of the many forms of eczema. It combines a home remedy—soaking in bath water diluted with laundry bleach—and antibiotics.

Creams or ointments that contain vitamin D and those that contain potent corticosteroids were shown to provide the most benefit to people with psoriasis, a skin condition that occurs most often on the elbows, knees, and scalp. Both products were shown to work better than other topical medications like dithranol (aka anthralin), salicylic acid (topical aspirin), coal tar-based preparations, and vitamin A.

You probably know that there’s an epidemic of bed bugs in the U.S., but chances are, you don’t know anyone who has been afflicted. I think I know why. For seven months, I was plagued by unseen bed bugs but never mentioned it beyond family members. I was afraid I would be treated as a pariah.
