About Maryann Napoli
Maryann Napoli was the webmaster and writer of most of this Website’s content. She was a co-founder and associate director of the Center for Medical Consumers, New York City. From 1976 to 1999, her articles appeared in the Center’s monthly newsletter HealthFacts. Thereafter, the Center began offering some of its monthly content digitally, while continuing to publish in hard copy. Between 2009 and 2012 all of the Center’s content was available free of charge at its website.
From 2000 to 2013, Napoli was an unpaid contributor to the Cochrane Collaboration, which describes itself as “an international, independent, not-for-profit organisation of over 28,000 [largely unpaid] contributors from more than 100 countries, dedicated to making up-to-date, accurate information about the effects of health care readily available worldwide.”
Over the years, her articles have appeared in The New York Times, The New Republic, Prevention Magazine, Self Magazine, Family Circle, and Ms.Magazine. She is the author of Health Facts: A Critical Evaluation of the Major Problems, Treatments, and Alternatives Facing Medical Consumers (Woodstock, NY: Overlook Press, 1982). And the Center for Medical Consumers Ultimate Medical Answerbook (Quill, 1995).
